Making Tax Digital

MTD without the guesswork: what changes, who submits, who has access.

Making Tax Digital is HMRC’s programme for keeping business records digitally and sending them through compatible software. For you, it means a few decisions up front — we help you make them and set things up so it all runs smoothly afterwards.

What changes

What MTD means for your business.

No scare stories and no deadlines we can’t vouch for — just what matters day to day. Who MTD applies to, and when, depends on your income and type of business, so we check the current rules for you during set-up.

  • A · records

    Digital records

Income and expenses are kept digitally in software or a connected spreadsheet, rather than on paper or in a shoebox of receipts.

  • B · software

    Updates sent through software

Returns and updates go to HMRC through MTD-compatible software. VAT returns already work this way; for Income Tax, MTD brings regular updates during the year.

  • C · access

    Your accountant needs authorisation

To act for you, we need to be authorised as your agent with HMRC. You stay in control of who can see and submit on your behalf.

Agent access

Authorising us with HMRC — step by step.

We tell you exactly what access we need and walk you through each step, so nothing gets stuck in a government login screen.

  1. Agree the scope

We decide together which taxes we look after — VAT, Self Assessment, payroll — and what we submit for you.

  2. Authorise us

We send an authorisation request through HMRC and help you approve it on your side.

  3. Connect software

We link your MTD-compatible software and bank feeds so records flow in automatically where possible.

  4. Set the routine

We agree what comes in automatically and what you send through the app or by email.

Submissions

Who submits — you or us?

Both work well. We choose the option that fits how many transactions you have and how you like to work.

option 1

You keep the records, we check and submit

You record sales and costs in MTD-compatible software as you go. We review everything, make adjustments and send the returns and updates to HMRC.

  • you see your numbers in real time
  • suits businesses with lots of transactions
  • we help you pick and set up the software
option 2

You send paperwork, we do the rest

You send receipts and invoices through the app or by email. We keep your digital records and handle every submission as your agent.

  • no new software for you to learn
  • works well for smaller sole traders
  • we agree how and when you send records

Your part

What you do yourself.

  • 01

Keep track of who in your business has access to your software and HMRC accounts — and remove it when someone leaves.

  • 02

Send anything that doesn’t arrive automatically — cash receipts, contracts, statements — through the app or by email.

  • 03

Let us know about changes: a new income stream, a new employee, a new bank account.

  • 04

Pay your tax using the summary you get by the 15th of each month.

Monthly routine

A month with MTD in four steps.

Once everything is connected, this is the rhythm. The same every month — no last-minute chasing.

  1. Records come in

Through the month, bank feeds and invoices flow into your software.

  2. We gather the rest

You send anything that isn’t there yet; we match it all up.

  3. We do the books

Your accountant reconciles everything and prepares any returns or updates due.

  4. By the 15th — your summary

You get a summary of tax to pay, with the amounts to transfer.

MTD questions

What people usually ask.

Do I need to buy software?

You need software that works with MTD. HMRC publishes a list of compatible products, and the right one depends on your business — we’ll help you choose something that makes sense for you.

Will you see all my financial data?

We see what you give us access to. You can change or remove our access whenever you like.

What about things that aren’t in the software?

Cash receipts, contracts or statements from other accounts — send them as you do now, through the app or by email.

When does MTD apply to me?

It depends on your income and the type of business, and HMRC phases changes in over time. So we don’t list dates here — we check the current rules for your business when we set you up.
