Volunteer

You don’t need to be a biologist. If you like being outdoors, are patient with children, or have a skill we could use — like taking good photos — we’d love to hear from you.

Who we need

Three ways to help

Pick whatever fits your time. You can start with a single event and see if it’s for you.

Outdoor events

Helping put up swift boxes on local estates, at family walks and at bigger events. A good way to start with a one-off.

Time: individual events, see programme.

Helping at the club

Supporting Paul Alder at the Saturday Young Birdwatchers’ Club: looking after the group, handling kit, getting everyone safely from place to place.

Time: Saturdays, regularly or on a rota.

Skills-based volunteering

Photos from events (never showing children’s faces), design, posters and learning materials. Some of it can be done from home, at your own pace.

Time: per project, to be agreed.

What’s involved

The first step is easy

  1. You sign up

Fill in a short form: your name, how to reach you and what you’d like to do. That’s all to start with.

  2. We have a chat

Kate Blackburn, our volunteer coordinator, will call or email you about upcoming events and what suits you.

  3. You join an event

At your first event you’ll be paired with someone from the team, who’ll show you how we work outdoors and with children.

Working with children. Volunteers who work with children need an enhanced DBS check, which we arrange, and read our safeguarding policy. Roles with no contact with children don’t need one.

We only need your contact details. We’ll sort out the rest when we talk.
